If you are an adult and ever tried to quit smoking, you realize how hard it can be. But have you ever found yourself wondering why teens have a harder time quitting smoking than adults. Teenagers are faced with a completely different set of challenges when attempting to quit smoking cigarettes than are adults.

Whether you may realize it or not, teen smoking is one of the major problems found in our society. Parents who have teenagers that smoke cigarettes find many challenges attempting to get their teens to quit - Or to keep them from beginning the habit in the first place.

Teenage smoking had been on the decline since the mid to late 1990s. But data that has come out just recently is beginning to show that cigarette smoking among teens is once again on the rise.

As adults we are aware of the serious long-term health risks and consequences of teenage smoking. We are all too familiar with the evidence pointing to chronic smoking related diseases. However, we wonder why some teens tend to ignore this evidence and begin smoking in the face of the many reasons why they shouldn't.

Among the various different reasons given for the difficulties in teenagers quitting smoking are friends and family who smoke, peer pressure, and advertising geared toward teenagers. Some of the other reasons may include a natural rebelliousness of the teen, or smoking to the relieve feelings of anxiety or sadness.

In the sections that follow, we consider some of the reasons why teens may have a harder time quitting smoking and how you may, as that teen's parent Or guardian, may begin to help.

Parents Who Smoke

If you are a parent who smokes can you honestly be wondering why it is harder for your teens to quit smoking?

We often find that teenagers have a tendency to imitate the people in her surroundings with whom they feel the closest. Having older brothers and sisters or parents who smoke cigarettes is one of the biggest risk factors for teenage smoking. This is one time you do not want your kids to copy your behavior.

Teenagers having parents who are smokers have a higher tendency to be smokers themselves. By smoking themselves, parents set an example and send a signal to their teenagers to "do as I say but not as I do." For better or worse, teenagers are going to "do as you do."

In many homes today, teenagers are simply modeling themselves after their parents, or other adults or so-called role models living in their homes.

If you are a smoker and have kids, you really should stop smoking before your kids pick up on your habit. If your teenagers have already begun smoking cigarettes, you should set the example by demonstrating to them how to quit smoking.

Peer Pressure

Another piece of the puzzle concerning why it is harder for teens to quit smoking has to do with peer pressure.

Being accepted among one's peers is a powerful motivator for adolescents. These young people wanting to fit in with their social groups are at a high risk for behaviors such as smoking.

Oftentimes a teenager will smoke as a way of showing rebellion. Going against school rules and parental rules by smoking can be seen as a rite of passage in some teenage social circles.

Some teenagers smoke to be cool or to be independent but they all seem to have the same desire to fit in with their peers, friends, or the social group that they think is cool.

Advertising

Although you'll find lots of teenagers admitting to peer pressure as a major reason for starting to smoke, other teenagers say cigarette advertising also played a role in their decision to start smoking. You can guess of course that folks in the tobacco industry blame many other factors besides the advertisements they are spending billions of dollars on.

Matthew Myers, president of Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, says that the most important customers for tobacco companies are teenagers. Advertising is used by tobacco companies to convince teenagers that smoking is cool says Myers.

Cigarette ads tend to glamorize smoking by making smoking appear to be cool and hip. According to psychologist John Pierce, PhD, of the Cancer Prevention and Control Program at the University of California, San Diego, "Cigarette advertising dissolves children's resistance to smoking with entertaining graphics such as Joe Camel that present smoking as fun, cool and a normal part of living the 'good life'."

These are just a few of the reasons that researchers feel that part of the efforts to keep kids from smoking should focus on educating kids about the manipulation of young people that is so prevalent in the tobacco industry today.

Movies

Most of us as parents tend to underestimate the influence that movies have on children. Even if we are educating our children to the fact that smoking is unacceptable, having children see their heroes and role models smoking in movies will tend to undermine our message.

Research has shown that the more children see their favorite movie stars smoking in movies, the more likely they will begin smoking. It is thought that 4 out of every 10 teenagers who smokes today were influenced in some way by the smoking they saw in movies.

The attorneys general in 32 states have recently begun calling for the major movie studios to include anti-smoking public service announcements with all movies where people are shown smoking.

States the director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research at the University of California at San Francisco, Stanton Glantz, filmmakers are "delivering 400,000 kids a year to the tobacco industry, and that's wrong. They're abusing their audiences, and their audience's parents, and it's totally unnecessary."

Biology

It is known that nicotine has the ability to suppress one's appetite and also your metabolism. These characteristics of nicotine make it a popular diet tool primarily for teen girls as well as some women.

Studies conducted by the University of Michigan found that 14 year old girls are two times as likely as boys to try smoking. The concerns given by these girls were fears surrounding their weight.

A number of surveys have indicated that perhaps as much as 30% of teenage girls as well as women give controlling their weight as one of the main reasons for smoking.

States Dr. Margaret R. Rukstalis, a psychiatrist at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in addictive behaviors, "The relationship between concerns about weight and smoking is dramatic."

And those teenagers who do begin experimenting with cigarettes can become addicted to nicotine much more quickly than can adults. Young brains, scientists seem to believe, are more receptive biologically to nicotine. This makes it especially hard to stop smoking.

A report by the National Institute on Drug Abuse stated that some adolescents can become addicted within days of beginning smoking. And it also appears that adolescent girls get hooked on nicotine faster then do adolescent boys.

Not Fully Aware of the Health Risks

If you are still wondering why is it harder for teens to quit smoking, another reason may be that they are not quite fully aware of the health risks of cigarette smoking.

A study recently conducted by the Centers for Disease Control stated that teenagers who begin smoking not only significantly increase their risk of developing lung cancer, but can early on begin showing signs that will eventually lead to heart disease and stroke.

Estimates are that 80% of adults who are smokers today began smoking as adolescents.

Although the health consequences of smoking cigarettes are known to us as adults, many teens don't seem to be fully aware of the long-term adverse health consequences of smoking.

It seems that kids are not fully able to grasp the concept of the damaging effects of tobacco. A challenge for us as parents is to help these kids begin to understand the long-term effects that smoking will have on them.

What Can We Do

Most experts agree that parents play the most significant role in their kid's decision to not smoke or to quit smoking.

By making it clear to their children that they disapprove of smoking, parents can exert more influence on the behavior of their children than they might think.

It has been shown that teenagers who feel as though their parents would not approve of them smoking were less than half as likely to smoke as kids having parents they thought didn't care. And those that do smoke are more likely to give up smoking.

It is a great idea to get to know and become familiar with the friends your teenager associates with. It is also a good idea to get to know their friends' parents as well. Having your children's friends over on a regular basis will help in that regard.

In addition, through the power of love for your kids, you can help them overcome the negative influences that certain peer groups may have over them. If your children senses that the love and support you have for them is more important than the acceptance by their peer group, they may very well choose your influence over that of their peers.

Smokers are absent from work more often and have more headaches and coughs than non- smokers. Smokers often have varying reasons for wanting to quit such as improving their health, increasing their lifespan, being around to take care of their families, or just to avoid the harassment that today's. Smokers often receive from the anti-smoking sector and become depressed when they try to quit and cannot shake the depression for about four weeks or until they start smoking again. Keep in mind that your second hand smoke can be making your friends, loved ones, children or others sick and try to slowly reduce the amount of cigarettes you smoke everyday.

Quit

Quitting is also hard because smoking is a big part of your life. Quite simply, the easiest way to stop smoking is whatever works for you. Quitting smoking helps you to get rid of many physical problems and protects from risk of harmful diseases. Quit smoking herbal has the benefit of solving a smoker's problems by making use of natural elements in order to achieve the best results it is better if these methods are used together, or at least two of them. Quit smoking is a thought uppermost in the minds of most smokers, though it is a task easier said than done. Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you will ever do.

Conclusion

One of the things that make this the best way to quit smoking is that we carry with us for life the knowledge of how difficult victory can be combined with the knowledge that we can overcome that level of difficulty. The best way to quit smoking is to take active steps towards your new goal and the easy way to quit smoking is a GREAT advice. The best way to quit smoking is the way that works for you.
If you're trying to quit smoking, there are ways to quit smoking with proven success rates that make the mission for a smoke-free life a lot easier to undertake. A few decades ago, the only quit smoking program that existed was going through the withdrawal cold turkey -- with little support.

Today, awareness of smoking-related health concerns and a general turnaround of society's acceptance of smoking has opened the doors to more possibilities and methods to quit smoking. Cold turkey doesn't cut it anymore.

Many people are turning to methods that seem simple and easy. The nicotine patch is one option that most people are using, and some opt for nicotine gum or lozenges. These programs are very different and individuals choosing one or the other have varying results. Here is a closer look at both methods of quitting smoking to see if one suits you.

The nicotine patch is one of the most popular ways to quit smoking. Often called the -stop smoking patch,- a nicotine patch involves sticking a series of self-adhesive patches containing nicotine to the upper body during the initial period of breaking away from cigarettes.

The patches release a dose of nicotine through the skin so that you can break psychological addictions with fewer physical cravings, slowly weaning yourself off nicotine at the same time by switching to lower dosage patches.

If you're trying to quit smoking, this can be a great option that has a high rate of success. Nicotine and stop smoking patch programs are cheap, costing the same or less than your cigarette habit, and are easily accessible to everyone, over-the-counter at pharmacies.

However, some people have sensitivity to the patch's strength and get rashes, while others suffer from periods of insomnia or vivid dreams. The effects are short-term, though, and don't last once the person has weaned off the patch.

Nicotine gum is another stop smoking support product that some people use to help with cravings when they're trying to quit smoking. Nicotine gum is a simple chewing gum containing a dose of nicotine. When a craving hits, the person can chew a piece of nicotine-releasing gum. Nicotine lozenges are also available.

While helpful, nicotine gum or lozenges often aren't effective on their own and rarely help heavy smokers who have bigger needs. The supply of nicotine isn't continual or constant, as with the patch.

Long-term use can result in addiction to the gum, rather than smoking cigarettes, and there really isn't any psychological program in place for the individual. At need, the person chews gum.

Caution: If a person uses a nicotine -stop smoking- patch, the individual cannot use nicotine gum or lozenges. The result of both products used together is a nicotine overdose that can make a person quite sick.

If you really want to quit, you can find several ways to stop smoking. When trying to quit smoking, there is a variety of methods that range from laser treatment to a simple piece of gum.

For the latest information about ways to stop smoking, consult with a health professional or check reputable websites for more information.

It's a subject that smokers hate to contemplate, they hear about it from the media, from spouses and from their children. "When will you quit smoking?" is the dreaded refrain. Smokers absolutely hate that question because it forces them to think about what they're doing to themselves, and possibly to others. When you finally do decide to lay that pack of cigarettes down, family support can be the key thing that keeps you from picking it back up. More than patches, pills, hypnosis or willpower, a supportive family helps keep you on track and smoke free.

Why is family support so important? Who knows you better than your spouse? They can tell when your willpower is beginning to weaken. They see the cravings, sense the rising frustration levels and know when you're just about to cave in and light up. A caring spouse can prevent you putting that cigarette to your lips with a simple, "I'm proud of you." That little phrase carries more weight with a smoker than all the haranguing about health problems. Smokers know what cigarettes do to them, but sometimes just knowing that someone sees their struggle and is proud of their efforts is all it takes to stay quit.

Supportive family can also help combat withdrawal symptoms. They are not going to be able to lessen the symptoms, but a patient, caring spouse can help mitigate the situation before you snap. Letting you back out of a stressful situation with shrieking kids, allowing you a few quiet minutest to pull yourself together; these simple acts can help you calm down before you blow your top. Irritability and a short temper are two of the most common withdrawal symptoms, but if you truly want to quit and your spouse is supportive, you can avoid losing that temper.

An awareness of why you're irritable and an understanding spouse will go a long way towards keeping you from picking the habit back up. Patience, a few quiet moments to pull yourself together and understanding are the things your family can provide; these tools are more effective than all the nicotine replacement strategies and don't cost a thing. Family support is crucial to your efforts, without that support the battle to withstand the cigarette's siren call can be more than you can take. If you're the spouse of a smoker who's trying to lay the habit down, be kind, show that you care and let them know you're proud of what they're trying to do.

There are a lot of people who think quit smoking hypnosis won't work, it can't work and it's just downright nuts. The truth is there is a lot of compelling evidence to suggest quit smoking hypnosis can actually be quite beneficial to someone trying to kick this most addictive of habits.

Quit smoking hypnosis works effectively on both fronts that must be addressed by a person in order to quit - the physical and psychological. Since the addiction roots itself into both these areas techniques, such as quit smoking hypnosis, actually have a fairly good chance of working. Quit smoking hypnosis works by helping a person reframe their thoughts. By addressing the addictions on the subconscious level, quit smoking hypnosis helps a person substitute healthier thoughts or behaviors in place of the desire to smoke.

Although quit smoking hypnosis has proven successful for many, there are things those wishing to kick the habit can do to give this process a greater chance at working. These include:

'Having resolve. Those who are wishy-washy about quitting are not likely to do so no matter what. When there is a real desire to quit, quit smoking hypnosis can help by working with that desire and bolstering it.

'Find motivation points. Whatever boosts up a person's resolve to quit should be considered and thought out. This can help with quit smoking hypnosis by assisting in gaining that resolve. Whether it's health, money or just a desire to get into a car that doesn't smell like an ashtray, these things can help with quit smoking hypnosis.

'Find other things for pleasure. One of the key reasons people fail at quit smoking hypnosis or quitting smoking in general is because of the pleasure factor many feel from the habit. By identifying other things that give this same kind of pleasure and using them as substitutes during quit smoking hypnosis, the process can be greatly aided.

'Find other ways to relax. While some admit they get pleasure from the habit, others say it helps them relax. Coming up with new ways to achieve this can greatly help quit smoking hypnosis have a real impact. The therapy itself will focus the mind on doing the new technique, but knowing what that technique should be in advance can be quite beneficial.

'Being open minded. While quit smoking hypnosis has a proven track record, it can be a hard procedure to have take if a person isn't open to the idea. The more a person wants to quit and they more they truly want quit smoking hypnosis to work, the more likely it is to obtain a positive outcome.

While it's never easy to kick the habit, quit smoking hypnosis can really help. When the mind is properly focused and reframed to consider and work toward a new lifestyle, anything is possible. Quit smoking hypnosis can really help.

There are virtually lots of useful- and sometimes stupid ways to quit smoking. And many of which would only be of value if you would only decide, once and for all, to really quit.

But the fact is, quitting is harder than restraining yourself from taking another stick from the pack. But it is possible. Some can do it with help from other people while others need supports of all sorts. Surprisingly, some find quitting easy and the subsequent stages that follow but the hard part comes from staying quit. This is where most problems come. Thus, some smokers are able to permanently quit through executing some techniques while others give in to the urges of the habit and addiction.

Wow would you quit smoking without help from outside support? Well, just think of the possibilities.

We can't tell you how hard or easy it would be because after all, everything will be largely dependent on your capacity to stop smoking altogether. But we can tell you much benefit you will incur if you would really decide to kick the habit.

But on top of everything, commitment to stopping the habit is the most essential factor that determines whether you could quit with support from external resources or without them.

For all failures in any venture you choose, in this case cigarette cessation, lack of commitment may be the root cause why you have failed. Now hat you aver understood this simple and plain truth, you may now become better into focusing all yur effort into committing yourself to a life without the dependence, both physical and mental, to cigarettes.

So here are some of the techniques you can do to effectively quit smoking without necessarily depending on outside support.

Restructure both your thought flow and your selection of words- we have heard a hundred of times before that action speaks louder than words. But have you realized that actions root from words so basically, the usage of words is the culprit for the success or failure of something you have decided to embark on.

If, say for example, you constantly say to yourself that "I cannot quit smoking because its hard" then you are less likely to be able to quit. This is something you have conditioned your mind to expect so it is just understandable that your mind will treat your expectations with some degree of seriousness.

Words have their own unique powers, whatever you tell to your mind will be accommodated and executed by the physical body. So be careful of what words to tell yourself when considering the option of quitting.

In away, words could cerate your source for encouragement. Having a bright perspective on the cessation process through the use of word and thoughts could yield far better results than sulkily thinking of the possibilities of life without cigarettes. The key here is to reconstruct yr thoughts into some form that would work well for you.

Another example-

If you are to take a quit smoking program, you don't have to say to yourself things that would decrease your motivation to take personal commitment on the program. Instead, increase your drive to loudly saying to yourself- take note that it is important that you take your words into actual actions- things that would revitalize your willpower to take the cessation process into another level.

You may be surprised with the response your body will have by simply putting good words into your mouth out of the good though flow of your mind.

Challenge yourself. If you can do extreme things like rock climbing or driving to its limit or simply taking the chance of ruining your health because of a nicotine-filled stick, then it's only possible that you can quit the smoking habit once and for all. There's nothing that could tell you no if you really want to quit except yourself. Or if, say you have started to the quitting process, only you can decide whether you would stay quit for good or you would relapse on the slightest provocation. It is really all up to you and not on your immediate environment.

Yu can do it alone but there is really no harm if you seek outside support. What's more important is that you will strongly commit yourself to breaking the habit.

Quit smoking is a thought uppermost in the minds of most smokers, though it is a task easier said than done. To quit is the way to improve your mental health. Being able to quit smoking is something that many smokers wish for. However, the most important factor when you are trying to quit smoking is will power. Your determination and willpower along with my excellent daily support will ensure that your desire to quit smoking is successful.

Weight

Weight gain can be a problem for some smokers who are quitting. Many people avoid quitting because they fear that they will gain a lot of weight after they stop smoking. One concern of many who try to quit smoking is the possibility of weight gain. On the other hand, some people actually lose weight when they quit smoking and others stay the same. In addition, the body does not digest food properly and insulin levels are depressed, which can reduce weight gain. Trying to quit smoking can be stressful as it is, you don't need to stress yourself out more by worrying about weight gain. In fact, you may be able to continue your normal diet without gaining weight. To avoid weight gain, it is important to exercise regularly, drink lots of water, and have plenty of low-fat foods available for snacks and meals.

Control

Controlling weight can sometimes distract you from your ultimate goal. Every minute and hour of every day after the actual "quit smoking" session will find you feeling stronger, healthier, and more in control. Write down why you want to quit? Do you want to feel in control of you life? It is time to take back control of your smoking habit. Most smokers cannot quit because they cannot control their psychological oral addiction (the actual hand-to-mouth ritual) and their craving for cigarettes. Do you want to feel in control of life? You can only really and successfully quit once you begin to like yourself more and want to take control of aspects of yourself and life that so far you have spent so long punishing yourself with poisonous cigarettes. You cannot let a cigarette control your life.

The primary piece of advice available on how to quit smoking is really quite simple. So whether or not you quit smoking is now entirely up to you. The main fact which you will need to remember is that starting to quit smoking is just the beginning. The key to quit smoking is to understand the process of why you smoke, how you got into it, what it does to your body and what happens when you stop. And the best time to quit smoking is RIGHT NOW.

Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of death in America and the most preventable. Smoking causes coronary heart disease, lung cancer, and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). The harmful health effects of smoking cigarettes are innumerable. First off, smoking statistics show it is a major cause of stroke. It is responsible for forty percent of all strokes in people under sixty-five.

Smoking contributes to reduced bone marrow that can result in bone and hip fractures. This is prominent in women who have passed menopause. It also has an effect on your skin. It causes wrinkles around the eyes and mouth and gives skin a leathery appearance in some people.

Smoking is also associated with cervical cancer, stomach ulcers and cancer, kidney and bladder cancers, coronary heart disease, and lung cancer. It can also contribute to cancer of your voice box and throat. Add erectile dysfunction to the list. It is said that one in every five deaths in the United States is smoking related.

Benefits of quit smoking

So far we have not said anything good about the health effects of cigarette smoking. And we will not. If you are getting the idea that it would be to your benefit to quit smoking you are ahead of the game.

According to the 1990 report of the US Surgeon General, 'Smoking is probably the most important modifiable cause of poor pregnancy outcome among women in the United States.' The effects of smoking on pregnant women are well documented on the quit.org website.

The Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health, 1964 stated that "the habitual use of tobacco is related to psychological and social drives reinforced and perpetuated by pharmacological actions on the central nervous system, the latter being interpreted subjectively as a stimulant or a tranquilizer depending on the individual response".

Actually, to rely on any perceived psychological or social benefit as an excuse to continue smoking is ludicrous when weighed against the known facts. Make no mistake about it. Smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products are a major cause of death.

There are many benefits to stopping smoking. These benefits are the reason why you should stop smoking. They wont in themselves help you stop smoking but they will provide you with motivation to go on and learn how to stop smoking successfully.

Stop smoking benefit #1: Your blood is partially 'disabled' by cigarette smoke. Carbon monoxide, a lethal gas found in every cigarette you smoke binds to the haemoglobin in your red blood cells. The carbon monoxide locks the red blood cell and stops it from being able to carry oxygen around your body. Smoking knocks out about 15% of your blood's oxygen carrying capacity. When you stop smoking, your body will repair your blood and it will be back to normal within 2 days!

Stop smoking benefit #2: Cigarette smoke and the cocktail of 3,500 chemicals found in it, have damaged nerves throughout your body. Within 2 days your body will start to re-grow these damaged nerves. Your sense of taste and smell will sharpen. You will not need to salt your food as heavily as you used to.

Stop smoking benefit #3: Smokers are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure. When you stop smoking, your blood pressure will come down without any other intervention just from stopping smoking. High blood pressure is known as the 'silent killer' that often goes unnoticed in people of middle age. High blood pressure makes your heart work harder and can result in an enlarged heart and heart disease. It is advisable to ask you doctor for a blood pressure check the next time you see them.

Stop smoking benefit #4: 90% of all lung cancer sufferers are smokers. The vast majority of smokers stop smoking the minute they are diagnosed with lung cancer, proving that quitting is possible. 10 years after quitting smoking, your risk of lung cancer will have halved.

Stop smoking benefit #5: Naturally, inhaling hot toxic gasses into your lungs 20 times a day causes considerable damage. Most significantly, smoking is a major contributor in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD. COPD includes such illnesses as bronchitis (the inflammation of the lung bronchioles (tubes)) and emphysema. Emphysema is when your lung tissues lose their elasticity and you cannot breath normally. Death from emphysema comes in the form of a slow and utterly debilitating suffocation over the course of a few years. It is irreversible and incurable.

Stop smoking benefit #6: Between 5 and 15 years after quitting smoking, your risk of a stroke will have returned to that of a non-smoker (depending upon other influencing factors such as diet).

Stop smoking benefit #7: On average, smokers die between 8 and 10 years earlier than non-smokers. Stopping smoking even in middle age can reduce the risks of ill health significantly and there are always benefits in stopping smoking, no matter what your age.

Stop smoking benefit #8: After years of smoking, you will have suffered from a chronic cough. Between 3 and 12 months after stopping smoking, this cough should have disappeared.

Stop smoking benefit #9: Within 3 months of stopping smoking, your circulation should have improved significantly. If you used to suffer from 'pins and needles', they should be a thing of the past now. Your risk of heart attack will have reduced significantly.

Stop smoking benefit #10: Not only can you smell better you do smell better too! Your general odour will be much more pleasant to those around you.

There is a Japanese proverb that says "fall down seven times, get up eight". Stopping smoking is just like that too. You have to keep trying to quit. My advice as ever is never stop trying to quit.
